MANN+HUMMEL: Innovative filtration for cleaner and more sustainable mobility

As pioneers in filtration technology, we are redefining sustainability. As innovation leaders, we drive the development of environmentally friendly filters and filtration systems for the automotive sector. We also focus on existing vehicles, as the EU ban on CO2-emitting vehicles only applies to new cars. This means that even after 2035, millions of passenger cars and commercial vehicles with gasoline or diesel engines will still be in operation, making the aftermarket absolutely vital.

With the goal of achieving carbon-neutral production by 2035 and a climate-neutral value chain by 2050, MANN+HUMMEL is accelerating technological transformation.

The use of plant-based raw materials, recyclable materials, and renewable energies helps significantly reduce our products' ecological footprint. Data-driven processes and measures lead to increasingly efficient and environmentally friendly products and manufacturing processes. Our holistic approach, which considers the entire lifecycle of filters and components, demonstrates that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand for cleaner mobility.

Sustainable mobility starts with us

The automotive industry faces political and social pressure to reduce its CO₂ footprint: About 25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU originate from the transport sector. Suppliers play a key role in decarbonization and implementing the circular economy, as most emissions occur in the upstream value chain, and around 80 percent of a filter's total footprint is determined during the research and development phase. As pioneers in filtration technology, we consider filtration the fourth dimension of sustainability.

  • The common definition of sustainability generally includes three dimensions: ecological, economic, and social. At MANN+HUMMEL, we see ourselves as pioneers and add a fourth dimension to these existing concepts: the dimension of technology. In our case, that is filtration.

Nils Detje

Director Global Corporate Social Responsibility

We use Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) – a common method for evaluating sustainability parameters – and Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) – CO₂ footprint of a filter, material, or components – for holistic sustainability assessment of our products and offer solutions for new and existing vehicles:

The recycling rate for the waste generated during the production of our filters is up to 98 percent. This means that nearly all production waste is materially or thermically recycled.

Marian Anton

Business Development Manager

  • MANN+HUMMEL develops innovative filtration solutions for new and existing vehicles to promote cleaner mobility.
  • We focus on sustainable product design and manufacturing to reduce our products' greenhouse gas emissions from the start.
  • Our company drives the development of recyclable materials to protect resources and reduce fossil raw material consumption.
  • MANN+HUMMEL works on retrofit solutions and updates for existing vehicles to improve their sustainability and serve the aftermarket.
  • We are committed to returning our products to the material cycle and implementing an automotive circular economy.
  • As a founding member, we are also active in the “Forum on Automotive Aftermarket Sustainability” (FAAS). Within this framework, we are taking the lead in preparing a study that examines the carbon footprint of the automotive aftermarket sector. We are also working on a standardized calculation methodology for the PCF - as a prerequisite for enabling a competitive, sustainable and responsible automotive aftermarket industry.

Valid data is key to future filtration

At MANN+HUMMEL, we rely on reliable data as the foundation for sustainable filtration solutions. Precise CO₂ calculations enable us to analyze our products' lifecycle accurately and identify optimization potential. We continuously improve data validation, data exchange along the value chain, and internal data availability.

  • Data acquisition is cross-functional and affects the entire value chain. The key to greater sustainability lies in automation and the exchange of data.

Alexander Kilian

Simulation Engineer, Digitalization

Through close collaboration with suppliers, the use of innovative platforms, and process automation, we lay the data foundation for future filtration. This already enables us to derive measures from robuts data to minimize our filters' CO₂ footprint and make a significant contribution to sustainability in filtration technology:

  • Greater sustainability has no negative impact on the performance and quality of our products. That is our brand promise.

Thilo Müller

Lead Product Engineer

  • We have our Life Cycle Assessment certified by independent testing institutes to ensure the accuracy of our calculations.
  • For data exchange with suppliers and manufacturers, we align with Catena-X, an open data ecosystem for the automotive industry.
  • We work on connecting various company divisions to efficiently use and exchange internal data.
  • To improve data availability, we are developing an algorithm that can calculate the CO₂ footprint quickly and precisely.
  • We drive automation to make data from internal and external sources available quickly and accurately.
